Preparing a Will
Drawing up a Will should bring clarity and peace of mind, and reduce the cost of winding up an estate.
If there is no Will the rules of intestacy apply to the estate. It is normally more time consuming and costly to wind up an estate without a Will.
The key points to think about when preparing a Will are:
- Appoint an executor – this should be a friend, a relative or your solicitor. The executor's role is to sign relevant paperwork to wind up the estate.
- List any specific bequests – e.g. a specific sum of money to a favourite charity or jewellery to named individuals, etc.
- Then narrate the named beneficiaries, including who is to inherit anything not specifically mentioned elsewhere (the residue).
We will prepare a draft Will for you to consider and then draw up the final version for signing. We normally store the Will at the head office in our special Wills safe.
We strongly advise you to avoid a home-made Will, as they are often vague and lead to disputes.
Costs
We have options available including a free Wills service with an option to make a payment to charity or payment of our fee (based on an hourly rate plus VAT). Please call us on 0131 467 5566 for a quotation.
